Why Breaking Into the Super Eagles Is No Easy Task - Chelle

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has outlined the reasons why it has been difficult for new players to establish themselves in Nigeria’s senior national team, as the squad prepares to return to action in March.

The Franco-Malian tactician stressed that maintaining a stable and consistent core of players remains central to his long-term vision for the team.

Since assuming the role nearly a year ago, Chelle has handed opportunities to several emerging players. However, only Sevilla forward Jerome Akor has succeeded in securing a regular place in the starting lineup, underscoring the competitiveness within the squad and the high standards required to earn a sustained role.

While reaffirming his openness to introducing new faces, Chelle explained that many players have found it difficult to adapt to the tactical and physical demands of his system.

“For the AFCON, we had a couple of young players who will benefit from the experience and be better for it in the future,” Chelle said. “But it’s not easy to break into the team at the moment because we are building a core, and we cannot make too many changes.”

He further noted that new players are expected to quickly understand and execute the team’s tactical approach, particularly in both attacking and defensive transitions, as well as in pressing structure and positional discipline when out of possession.
