Canada captain Stephen Eustaquio revealed that his dramatic stoppage-time winner against South Africa was dedicated to his FC Porto teammate, Zaidu Sanusi, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Eustaquio scored the decisive goal as co-hosts Canada secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Sunday to become the first nation to qualify for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Eustaquio explained the emotional significance behind his goal celebration after being asked why he shouted a particular name.

"Yes, it was my teammate at FC Porto, Zaidu Sanusi," he said. "The goal was dedicated to him. We spoke on the phone before the game about how they treat other migrants. I needed to score."

The encounter in Houston appeared destined for extra time after both sides failed to find the breakthrough during regulation. South Africa frustrated the hosts with a disciplined defensive display, keeping Canada's attacking threats at bay for much of the contest.

However, in the first minute of stoppage time, the ball dropped kindly to Eustaquio inside the penalty area. The Canadian skipper expertly brought it down with his chest before rifling a superb half-volley into the far corner to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.

The victory ensures Jesse Marsch's side become the first team to book a place in the knockout stages of the tournament. Canada will now return to Houston in six days' time, where they will face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16.
