Why Chelle Dumped Marseille Offer
Sampson Adedeji
The reason Eric Chelle decided to remain with the Super Eagles and turn down an approach from French Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille has emerged, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Chelle was reportedly among the leading candidates for the Marseille job following his impressive run with Nigeria at the recent tournament in Morocco, where the Super Eagles delivered a commendable performance.
His tactical discipline and ability to manage a multicultural squad were said to have caught the attention of the former European champions.
However, despite initial interest in the Nigerian tactician, Marseille eventually appointed Habib Beye as their new head coach.
Reports indicate that Beye agreed to significantly lower financial terms to secure the position.
According to sources close to the negotiations, Chelle opted to stay with Nigeria due to ongoing contractual discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The 46-year-old coach is understood to have requested an improved salary package from the NFF, though talks are still ongoing and no final agreement has been reached.
Financial considerations also played a role in Marseille’s decision-making process.
Beye is expected to earn a monthly salary of €90,000 six times less than his predecessor Roberto De Zerbi, who reportedly earned €540,000 per month before his departure.
Chelle’s decision to continue with the Super Eagles is seen as a boost for Nigeria as preparations intensify for upcoming international assignments.
