Despite enduring poor treatment from the South African Football Association (SAFA), Desiree Ellis has remained at the helm of Banyana Banyana, and the reason behind her continued stay has now come to light, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ellis, who guided South Africa to their historic first-ever Women's Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022, has had her contract situation in limbo for the past six months following the expiration of her previous deal.

According to a source within the team camp, SAFA is aware that Ellis has limited coaching opportunities available locally a factor they believe gives them leverage.

“They know she hasn’t got a lot of options in South Africa. But that’s no excuse for the way she has been treated,” the source said.

“She’s definitely not happy with the situation. I believe if an opportunity came from the United States perhaps in college soccer she’d take it. But unfortunately, nothing like that has come her way,” the source added in a chat with UK-based Nigerian journalist Osasuo.
