Why I Accepted Nigerian Job – Eric Chelle

Sampson Adedeji Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed the real reason behind his decision to take charge of Nigeria’s national team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Chelle was appointed in January after leaving Algerian side MC Oran, where he had signed a two-year contract. Since his arrival, the Franco-Malian has overseen two World Cup qualifying matches, securing one win and a draw. 

Speaking to UK-based Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana at the 2024 CHAN tournament in Tanzania, Chelle insisted his move to Nigeria was never about money.

“When I came to Nigeria, it wasn’t for money. I was earning more in my last job. I came because this is a big team, and I wanted to prove myself, to achieve something. I came for the challenge, and nothing has changed about that,” he said.

The coach also disclosed that his interactions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership have been limited.

“I haven’t had much contact with the NFF president or the general secretary since taking charge. We met at the start and a few times after, but I’ve largely been on my own, focusing on my job,” he explained.

Chelle admitted he is aware of speculations about his job security.

“I’ve heard stories about them wanting to sack me and replace me. I know I can be fired after one match—that’s football. But if they do, they must be ready to pay the remainder of my contract.”

The 46-year-old’s next test will come in September when Nigeria host Rwanda in Uyo before travelling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa.

The qualifiers conclude in October, with the Super Eagles set to return to action at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled from December 2025 to January 2026.
