Why Morocco Won't Win 2023 AFCON - Moroccan Ex-international
By Sampson Adedeji
Despite being tagged as a top favourite to lift the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations, former Moroccan international, Abdeslam Quaddou, has revealed reasons the prediction will not come to pass, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Following their decent performance in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Atlas Lions are considered a strong contender alongside their neighbours Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia.
But the former defender believe the style of play and adaptation may hinder them.
"Logic would dictate that the Moroccan national team is among the favourites to win CAN 2023, given its performances and results during the previous World Cup (2022).
However, to tell the truth, in my opinion, Morocco is not the favourites, because the CAN is a very different competition.
The conditions of the CAN will be different from those of the World Cup. You know that it is always difficult to designate teams from North Africa as favourites when the tournament takes place in sub-Saharan Africa.
"I'm not saying that North African teams can't win the CAN; they have the capacity.
"But I don't consider them favourites because of their style of play based on possession and speed in transitions.
"North African teams must be well organized and adapt to African conditions, such as the tropical climate in Ivory Coast.
"All these factors could pose problems for the teams of Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, and even Morocco", he explained.
