Why Osimhen's Temper Could Halt Nigeria's AFCON Title Hopes

 Super Eagles delivered a commanding performance on Monday night, defeating Mozambique 4–0 in their Round of 16 clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Fez, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

However, an on-field incident involving star striker Victor Osimhen has sparked conversations around discipline and team harmony as the tournament progresses.

Osimhen scored twice in the emphatic victory, with Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams also getting on the scoresheet to seal Nigeria’s place in the quarterfinals. The result underlined the Super Eagles’ title credentials, but moments of visible frustration from the Galatasaray forward drew attention away from an otherwise dominant display.

In the 63rd minute, Osimhen reacted angrily after Lookman opted not to pass to him in a promising attacking move. Television footage showed the striker confronting Lookman verbally, while team captain Wilfred Ndidi was pushed aside as he attempted to calm the situation.

The tension appeared to linger beyond the final whistle. Osimhen left the pitch immediately after the match without joining his teammates for the customary post-match acknowledgements. He was also the first player to exit the dressing room and declined to speak with journalists in the mixed zone. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau was later seen following the striker out of the dressing area.

In contrast, Lookman earned praise for his composure, choosing to walk away from the confrontation without responding to Osimhen’s outburst.

While Osimhen’s passion and competitive drive have been key to Nigeria’s success, there are growing calls for the Super Eagles’ technical crew, led by head coach Eric Chelle, to address the striker’s emotional reactions during matches. Observers warn that unchecked frustration could disrupt team unity at a critical stage of the tournament.

With Nigeria firmly among the favourites for the AFCON title, maintaining discipline and collective focus may prove just as important as tactical quality and individual brilliance.
