Wilfred Ndidi could be named captain of the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, after William Troos Ekong exit from the continental showpiece later this month, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Beşiktaş star also wore the armband during Nigeria’s CAF 2026 World Cup playoff fixtures, also held in Morocco. His return to leadership duties comes after injury forced him out of the delayed 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.

Ndidi, 28, becomes the squad’s most senior international player following the absence of defender William Troost-Ekong, who will not participate in the tournament as he focuses on securing a new club contract in Saudi Arabia. Although included in Nigeria’s initial 54-man provisional list, Troost-Ekong who was voted Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023 has since announced his retirement from international football.

A former U17 and U20 international, Ndidi made his senior debut in August 2015 and has accumulated 71 caps for Nigeria. He first featured for the Super Eagles in a friendly against DR Congo before appearing days later in a 3–0 win over Cameroon. Ndidi was also part of Nigeria’s provisional squad for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Despite his lengthy international career, the defensive midfielder is still seeking his first goal for the national team.
