World Athletics Yet To Approve Favour Ofili's Switch To Turkey

World Athletics has clarified that it is yet to review or approve the transfer of allegiance applications submitted by the Turkish Athletics Federation, amid growing reports of elite athletes switching nationalities, including Nigeria's Favour Ofili, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The global athletics governing body confirmed receiving four applications from Turkey but declined to reveal the identities of the athletes involved.

“We can confirm that the Nationality Review Panel (NRP) has received four applications from the Turkish Member Federation requesting athlete transfers. These applications have not yet been reviewed or approved by the NRP,” World Athletics stated.

The organization explained that the applications will be assessed through standard procedures over the coming months.

During this period, the athletes involved will not be permitted to compete for any federation.

 “World Athletics does not comment on the identity of athletes involved in ongoing applications to protect the integrity of the process and the privacy of the individuals concerned,” the statement added.

The body also emphasized the mandatory three-year waiting period for athletes granted a successful transfer before they can represent their new country.

 “It should be noted that, should the applications be successful, there is a standard three-year waiting period before an athlete can represent their new member federation,” World Athletics told Punch correspondent.
