The Democratic Republic of Congo began their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on a positive note after holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group match, BDNSports.com.ng reports.
Portugal, former European champions, made a bright start to the encounter and took the lead in the sixth minute, putting the Leopards under early pressure.
However, DR Congo responded strongly and were rewarded just before halftime when Newcastle United forward Yohan Wissa found the back of the net in the 45th minute to restore parity.
The second half saw Portugal dominate possession and create several scoring opportunities in search of a winning goal. Despite their efforts, the Congolese defence stood firm to frustrate their opponents.
DR Congo also looked dangerous on the counterattack, but neither side could find a breakthrough as the contest ended 1-1.
The result gives the Leopards a valuable point as they continue their quest to progress from the group stage of the tournament.
