World Cup 2026: South Africa Hold Czech Republic To Crucial 1-1 Draw

South Africa kept their slim hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive on Thursday, battling back for a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in their second Group stage match, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Bafana Bafana entered the contest under pressure following a disappointing opening defeat to Mexico. 

A positive result was widely seen as essential if they were to remain in contention for the round of 16.

The Czechs came out strongly and took the lead as early as the sixth minute when forward Michal found the net, handing South Africa an early mountain to climb.

Despite the setback, South Africa gradually grew into the game and mounted sustained pressure in search of an equalizer. 

Their persistence paid off in the closing stages when captain Teboho Mokoena calmly converted a penalty in the 86th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the South African contingent.

The draw earns South Africa a valuable point, but their fate remains in their own hands. 

To have any realistic chance of progressing from the group, Bafana Bafana must now secure a victory against South Korea in their final group-stage fixture.

The result leaves the group standings tight, with South Africa still requiring maximum points from their remaining match to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
