World Cup Playoff Jeopardy For DR Congo Amid Visa Dispute As FIFA Silent On Nigeria Fate

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s preparations for the World Cup playoff have been thrown into uncertainty amid unresolved visa challenges, while FIFA has yet to issue a decision on a formal protest lodged by Nigeria, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) submitted a petition to FIFA alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during their CAF World Cup playoff encounter in Mexico. In that match, DR Congo defeated Nigeria’s Nigeria national football team 4–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation time.

More than two months after acknowledging receipt of the complaint, FIFA has yet to make a public statement or announce a ruling on the matter, leaving Nigeria’s fate in the competition uncertain.

Compounding the situation are fresh administrative hurdles confronting the Congolese delegation. According to sources close to the process, the team has not yet secured the necessary visas to travel to Mexico. Passports were reportedly sent to the country where the relevant Mexican consulate is processing the applications, but no official confirmation of visa issuance has been communicated.

Reports indicate that the Mexican consulate has declined to grant collective visas, instead requiring individual appointments and the physical presence of each applicant. Such requirements have created logistical challenges for the delegation and raised concerns about potential delays.

The developments have sparked apprehension within football circles, particularly given past travel controversies during the Africa Cup of Nations, when administrative missteps drew criticism over the management of official delegations and public funds.

With the playoff fixture approaching, pressure is mounting on the Congolese Ministry of Sports to secure a swift resolution. One option reportedly under consideration is an arrangement with a Mexican airline to facilitate emergency travel documentation, including the possibility of visas issued on arrival.

As both the visa situation and the pending FIFA decision remain unresolved, uncertainty continues to surround the immediate future of DR Congo’s World Cup campaign.
