World Cup Playoffs: Ekong Expects Tough Game Against DR Congo

Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has admitted that Nigeria faces a difficult challenge in Sunday’s decisive World Cup playoff clash against DR Congo, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ekong expressed confidence in the team’s readiness but acknowledged that Congo will be tough opponents.

“The boys are happy to be here, to be competing on Sunday. There is no other motivation needed. We all want to go to the World Cup. It is going to be a difficult game. Congo also did well to get to the final. We are looking forward to it,” he told the Super Eagles media team.

Reflecting on their semi-final win over Gabon, Ekong noted that each match presents unique challenges.

“Every game brings a new challenge. Against Gabon it was difficult. They were dangerous on the counter-attack which we dealt with.”

The former PAOK Salonika defender added that DR Congo should not be underestimated.

 “Congo, I know one or two players in their team. I know that they are a good side. It’s going to be a different challenge entirely. I don’t think we can compare them to other teams in Africa but we have to adapt.”

The Super Eagles will face DR Congo on Sunday in Rabat, with the winner securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
