World Cup Playoffs: FIFA Clears Two Belgium-Born Stars To Represent DR Congo

FIFA has officially approved the nationality switch of two Belgium-born players to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs in Africa, which kick off on Thursday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Celtic forward Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Standard Liège goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo have both received clearance to feature for DR Congo in their semifinal clash against Cameroon.

Both players, who have Congolese roots, were born and raised in Belgium and previously represented the country at youth and U-21 levels.

However, since they never played for Belgium’s senior national team, FIFA granted their eligibility change.

According to the global football body, Epolo’s clearance came through on Wednesday, while Balikwisha was approved on Tuesday.

The winner of DR Congo vs. Cameroon will face the victor of Nigeria vs. Gabon in Sunday’s playoff final.

All matches in this decisive World Cup qualifying playoff series are taking place in Rabat, Morocco.
