World Cup Playoffs: Nigeria Remain Best In Africa, But We Will Give Our Best – DR Congo Coach
Sampson Adedeji
DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has acknowledged the strength and quality of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, describing them as one of the best national teams on the African continent. However, he insists his side will give everything when both teams clash in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff series, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Leopards booked their place in Sunday’s decisive encounter after edging past Cameroon in a tense semi-final battle. With a World Cup ticket now within reach, Desabre believes his team is steadily evolving into a side capable of challenging the continent’s elite.
“Nigeria remains the best in Africa. We know we still have room for improvement against teams ranked ahead of us in the FIFA rankings,” Desabre said, as quoted by actualite.cd.
“We have experienced players. What we are putting in place has not happened overnight. We’ve been working for three years to be capable and strong against teams like Cameroon and to beat teams like that. We know we’re progressing to qualify for a World Cup.”
The French coach emphasized that their long-term project is focused on consistent development and global recognition.
“The ultimate goal within six years is to finish in the top nine at least. We’re making progress, we’ve taken a good step today, and we’ll have a team against Nigeria to show what we’re capable of.”
Looking ahead to the final showdown, Desabre assured that DR Congo will leave no stone unturned.
“It will be a different kind of match. Whatever happens, we’re going to give it our all.”
Nigeria and DR Congo meet in Rabat on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026 for a last chance at securing a place at the World Cup.
