Former Nigeria's Super Eagles forward Benedict Akwuegbu has thrown his weight behind his former teammate Finidi George, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Finidi was criticized harshly after the Super Eagles failed to get maximum points on day 3 of the World Cup qualifier against South Africa

While speaking on Jamz FM 100.1 Ibadan on Saturday, a former Austria-based pleaded for time for Finidi.

" It's just his first competitive game and he needed our support.

You can't judge him with one game as everyone can see especially in the second half.

The team will improve under him, starting from the game against Benin.

" Nigeria still has a chance of qualifying from the group and the game against Benin will prove that", he said

Akwuegbu was part of the Super Eagles team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.
