World Cup Qualifier: Chelle Voices Frustration, Considers Next Step

Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, has expressed disappointment following his team’s draw against Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifier, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Despite taking the lead early in the game, the three-time African champions failed to secure all three points.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chelle acknowledged his frustration but remained hopeful about the team’s qualification chances.

"In the first half, we had the opportunity to score at least 10 goals. Zimbabwe came to defend, but my players dominated with possession and quick attacks," he said.

"I’m very disappointed—for my players, for the country. Given the situation now, we have to start focusing on securing second place. We deserved to win, but that’s football."

Chelle pointed out that fatigue might have played a role in the team's struggles toward the end of the match.

"In the last 10 minutes, it became difficult for us. We played with great intensity in the first half, and perhaps the players were a little tired," he noted.

"After our goal, I instructed my players to push for another, but fatigue may have set in. We used a diamond formation, which demands a lot of energy. That’s why we positioned Ademola on the left and adjusted the setup accordingly."

He also defended his tactical decisions.

"Once we scored, it became tough for Victor, so I made a change. I didn’t want to bring in a defender, and maybe that decision wasn’t ideal. But if we had won, no one would question it," Chelle explained.
