World Cup Qualifiers: Mouyouma Admits Gabon Fell Short In Defeat To Nigeria

Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has conceded that his side were second-best in crucial moments of their 4-1 loss to Nigeria in Thursday’s semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The defeat at Stade Prince Héritier Moulay Hassan in Rabat ended the Panthers’ hopes of reaching the Inter-Continental Play-Off.

Nigeria’s victory moves the Super Eagles to within one win of next March’s decisive playoff tournament, where six teams will battle for two places at the 2026 World Cup.

Akor Adams broke the deadlock for Nigeria in the 78th minute before Mario Lemina equalised for Gabon in the 89th, forcing extra time.

However, the Super Eagles took control thereafter: Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead early in extra time, and Victor Osimhen sealed the win with goals in the 102nd and 110th minutes.

‘We were not good enough’ — Mouyouma “We were not sharp enough in the offensive box, and we didn’t defend well in our defensive box. Nigeria did both and scored,” Mouyouma admitted.

“The match was decided on fine margins. The scoreline doesn’t show how well we competed against one of the most dangerous attacking sides in Africa.”

The Gabon coach added that the experience gained will drive their preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“It is painful that our dream of reaching the continental playoff is over, but we will learn from this and regroup for AFCON.”
