World Taekwondo Federation Celebrates Nigerian Martial Arts Veterans

The ongoing Nigeria Taekwondo Federation National Open Trials witnessed an emotional moment on Friday as two distinguished Nigerian Taekwondo Grand Masters were honoured by the World Taekwondo Jidokwan Federation for their decades-long contributions to the sport, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Grand Master Sunday Koffi Akani and Grand Master Dominic Asuquo Bassey were officially recognised and decorated with the prestigious 7th Dan rank during a ceremony held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta.

The recognition ceremony took place shortly after the scheduled Kukkiwon Dan Grading Test and drew admiration from athletes, officials, and spectators attending the national trials.

Speaking during the presentation, President of the World Taekwondo Masters Union and representative of the World Taekwondo Federation, Grand Master Kim Lee, described the honourees as symbols of commitment, resilience, and service to the development of Taekwondo in Nigeria.

“On behalf of the World Taekwondo Jidokwan family, we are honoured to recognise your immense contributions to the growth of Taekwondo from its formative years to the present day,” Kim Lee said.

“You have both dedicated yourselves tirelessly to the advancement of the sport, and this recognition reflects the value of your sacrifices and commitment.”

An emotional Grand Master Akani, while responding after receiving the honour, expressed gratitude for being alive to witness the recognition after more than five decades of dedication to Taekwondo.

“You may not fully understand the reason behind my tears,” he said. “This honour is coming while I am still alive to receive it personally after 54 years of hard work and commitment.”

Akani also acknowledged the support of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation leadership, particularly its president, Grand Master Tayo Popoola, while noting that he remains actively involved in training athletes at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos.

Reflecting on the future of the sport, the veteran martial artist urged younger practitioners to prioritise discipline, dedication, and service above financial gain.

“I want the younger generation to understand that money should not be the primary motivation,” he stated. “They must work hard and contribute to the growth of the sport because true dedication will ultimately open doors to greater success.”

The recognition ceremony emerged as one of the major highlights of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation National Open Trials, which continues to showcase some of the country’s most promising Taekwondo talents.
