Wydad Looks To Upset Al Ahly In CAF Champions League Final
By Gbenga Gboyega
Wydad Athletic Club will face Al Ahly in the final of the 2023 CAF Champions League, with the former deemed the underdog going into the two-legged affair against the latter who are the competition's most successful team.
BSNSports.com.ng looks at the chances for Wydad Casablanca who are three-time champions, against the most successful club in the competition - Al Ahly who have 10 of those in their trophy-laden cabinet.
Some have christened Al Ahly as the Real Madrid of Africa, following their concurrent continental and domestic dominance over time, considering the 42 Egyptian League titles and 38 Egyptian Cups in their belt.
However, Wydad AC will not be pushovers, as they also pride themselves as the Red Castles of Morocco with 24 League titles of their own plus 10 Throne Cups, making them the most successful Moroccan team.
Wydad has been runner-up in two editions of the CAF Champions League in 2011 and 2019, finished as a semifinalist thrice (2016, 2020, 2021), and quarter-finalists twice before.
But Al Ahly remains the bookie's favorite, having won two of the last three editions, albeit losing to current opposition, Wydad in last year's edition.
Both teams have combined to win five of the last ten editions, with three of those going the way of Al Ahly, while the other two favored Wydad, which sets up an interesting tie in this year's final.
The two-legged games will go down at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt today, and the Stade Mohammed V in Morocco in 7 days.
