Zamalek Oppose Proposed CAF Champions League Expansion, Threaten Withdrawal

Egyptian giants Zamalek have reportedly threatened to withdraw from this season's CAF Champions League if the Confederation of African Football (CAF) proceeds with plans to expand the competition's format, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The White Knights are said to be strongly opposed to proposals that could increase the number of participating clubs, particularly amid reports that revised qualification criteria could open the door for additional teams, including their fierce rivals Al Ahly.

According to reports, Zamalek believe any changes to the existing qualification structure would undermine the sporting integrity of Africa's premier club competition. The club maintains that participation should continue to be determined strictly on merit under the current qualification system.

The Cairo-based side is also concerned that expanding the tournament could reduce its competitiveness while creating what it considers preferential opportunities for selected clubs. Their opposition comes against the backdrop of the long-standing rivalry between Zamalek and Al Ahly, a contest that has frequently extended beyond domestic football into continental affairs.

CAF has yet to announce a final decision on the proposed expansion. However, discussions over restructuring the Champions League have gathered momentum in recent months as the continental governing body explores ways to enhance the competition's commercial value, broaden its reach and strengthen its global profile.
