Zambian Referees’ Committee Chairman Resigns Over Corruption Allegations

Gladys Lengwe Mweeba has resigned from her position as chairman of the referees’ committee of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), citing widespread corruption within the country’s refereeing system, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The former international referee announced her decision to step down, stating that she could no longer tolerate what she described as the “level of corruption and filth” affecting refereeing in Zambia.

Mweeba, who previously officiated at international level and later took up administrative duties within FAZ, said the current situation had made it impossible for her to continue serving in the role with integrity.

According to sources close to the situation, the veteran referee expressed deep frustration with practices within the refereeing structure, insisting that the environment no longer aligned with the values she believes should guide football officiating.

Her resignation is expected to raise fresh concerns about governance and transparency in Zambian football, particularly within the refereeing department, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the credibility of domestic competitions.

The Football Association of Zambia has yet to release an official statement regarding her resignation or announce a replacement to lead the referees’ committee.
