Zero Budget, No Food: Crisis Looms As FCT Athletes Train With Empty Stomach Ahead Of Para Sports Festival

Concerns have emerged over the participation of athletes representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the upcoming 3rd National Para Sports Festival, following delays in budget approval for their preparation and welfare, BSNSports.com.ng reports..

With less than 24 hours to the start of the competition, BSN Sports observed an absence of athletes at a designated training camp during a visit on Thursday, raising questions about the state of readiness of the contingent.

Sources within the camp indicated that athletes had been training regularly in the lead-up to the event but were facing significant welfare challenges, including a lack of financial support and basic provisions leading to hunger and lack of proper training. 

There were also claims that allowances had not been paid following refusal of the FCT Administration to approve the budget submitted before it. This also led to uncertainty among the athletes competing at their optimal level when the event gets started.

The situation has sparked concern given the importance of the festival, which serves as a major platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their talents and compete at a national level.

Stakeholders have called on the FCT Administration to urgently address the reported issues, stressing the need for adequate support to ensure athletes can compete under fair and dignified conditions. Observers note that such support is critical not only for performance but also for the continued development of para sports in Nigeria.

The National Para Sports Festival is regarded as a key event in the country’s sporting calendar, bringing together athletes from across Nigeria in a celebration of resilience, inclusion, and athletic excellence.
