Bayelsa State athletes on Monday staged a protest over the unfulfilled promises by the state government.

The protest which took place on Monday 27th was a response to the state government's negligence toward fulfilling the 2018 promise made to them by the previous administration for winning laurels in the 2018 edition of the National Sports Festival in Abuja.

A para-athlete, John Gift, who was part of the protest explained that the reason they took to the road was to remind the sitting governor of the promise made to them by the previous government which has not been fulfilled

He further said that sportsmen in the state have not been able to participate in any sporting activities both at local and international level because of the global pandemic which has led to the postponement of major sporting events

Faith Tamani, another disabled athlete emphasized that the government has not really done much in making sure that the promised-money are paid. She appealed to the Governor to come to their aid even if it requires paying on instalment payment.

Our correspondent Promise Okotoko reports that after a peaceful dialogue with the government through the Governor's chief of staff, Chief Benson Agadaga asked for 2-day, so that he could present the issue that led to the protest before the Governor Sen. Douye Diri
