AFCON 2019: NFF Divides Over Rohr's Eagles Future

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is divided over the future of Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr.

While some members believe that he should be relieved of his duty, others want him retained.

Although, a decision about his future is expected to be taken anytime from now, some members are angling for his sack on the premise that he does not have anything new to offer the squad.

Rohr, who has a year left on his contract with the NFF, has been heavily criticized for his tactics and selection in the tournament, but NFF president Amaju Pinnick is not disposed towards his sack.

The Franco-German, who took charge of the Super Eagles in August 2016 and qualified the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, with a match to spare, before doing so in reaching Egypt 2019, has been lambasted by critics as being stereotype, indecisive and fixated.

The NFF have also come under fire for sticking with an expatriate coach, who failed to go beyond the World Cup group stage and has now fallen short at the AFCON, while an indigenous handler, former national team captain, late Stephen Keshi achieved both feats during his time.

However, Rohr has admitted that he will have to face what is to come afterwards.

He told BBC Sport: “I’m still under contract for another year, so we will see what is decided together.

“There is no hurry because we will take a look at my overall results after the third-place match.

“He will remain in the job. I have complete confidence in him,” said Pinnick, adding, “Gernot has taken us to the semifinal, the target we set for him.

“There are some people that have been calling on me and the federation to sack Gernot. But I am not going to do that.
