By Our Reporter
The champions, Desert Foxes of Algeria would need to win their third group match, if they want to maintain their presence in the 33rd African Cup of Nations in Cameroon. The North African team had made just one point in two games.
Algeria beat Senegal in the 2019 AFCON final to become the defending champions. Algeria will want to retain the trophy, but they have started on a very poor note. Algeria will need to beat Cote D'Ivoire in the third game.
Sierra Leone held the 2019 champions in the first match. The Algerians couldn't convert a chance despite the pressure they mounted on the West African team. It didn't end just like that. Algeria also lost to the lowly rated Equatorial Guinea in the second match.
So far, Algeria have made just one point and have failed to score a goal. Algeria will meet Cote D'Ivoire in the last but more crucial encounter. Actually, it will be a clash of the titans as two African giants would lock horns.
The Elephants of Cote D'Ivoire didn't use their second game to reach the round of 16. They faced Sierra Leone yesterday. And Kamara's dramatic late equalizer stole the show. It delayed Cote D'Ivoire from booking a place yesterday.
Ivory Coast would need to win its third match as well. It can't afford to lose the game at all. If the team really wants to progress beyond the group stage. Cote D'Ivoire had already made four points from two matches. But four points aren't enough to qualify.
If the defending champions, Algeria beat Cote D'Ivoire, it means the two will be on the same points. Goal difference should be used to settle it unless Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea draw the match.
In order to avoid issues, it is necessary for Cote D'Ivoire to win the match as well. This will enable them to even top the group.
