AFCON 2021: Egypt Knocks Out Host To Set A Final Date With Senegal
The Pharaohs of Egypt on Thursday night beat host Cameroon 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time to set up a final match clash with Senegal, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Pharaohs had a start to forget to the tournament after losing 1-0 to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their first game of the campaign but picked themselves up after the disappointing results.
They struggled to a 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau and Sudan in their 2nd and 3rd games of the group stages.
They then played 120 minutes in the round 16 and quarter-finals where they beat Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties and Morocco 2-1 after extra time.
The Pharaohs had yet another 120 minutes of game against the host Cameroon in the semi-final but they eventually had the better of the host 3-1 on penalties despite having their coach and his assistant sent off during the game.
The most successful team on the continent will have Senegal to contend with for their 8th title while their opponent, Senegal will be looking forward to winning their first ever continental trophy.
Meanwhile host Cameroon will be gutted but to have qualified for the finals after losing to Egypt 3-1 on penalties.
The Indomitable Lions who have so far hosted a successful tournament will tackle Burkina Faso in the 3rd place match on Saturday.
