AFCON 2021: European Clubs United Not To Release Players Sampson Adedeji The fast approaching 2021 African Cup of Nations is faced with another dilemma as European clubs have united not to release players for the competition, BSNsports.com.ng can report. Due to the breakout of a new coronavirus variant, Omicron, the European clubs across Europe are sceptical about releasing players for the tournament because they will have to isolate on their return. The clubs under European Club Association (ECA) has written an official letter to the Confederation of African Football (ECA) maintaining the stance of clubs not ready to release players. The highest number of players that will take part in the competition plays with a European club, especially in England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. The African Soccer governing body is yet to react to the letter and the issues will be resolved. The competition is scheduled to start on January 9 and run till February 6, 2022.
