AFCON 2021: How Lookman Was Dropped From Eagles AFCON Squad
By Abidoye Babatunde
Leicester forward Ademola Lookman was not picked for the AFCON because his change of international allegiance has yet to be approved by FIFA, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Lookman has featured for various England age-group teams and will need FIFA clearance for him to now play for the Super Eagles.
The young prolific striker was listed on the provisional squad for the AFCON, but did not eventually make the final 28-man squad for the tournament in Cameroon.
However Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Melvin Pinnick has been in touch with Lookman in recent hours and has an update on the international future of the winger.
Asked why Lookman wasn't named in Nigeria's AFCON squad, Pinnick disclosed that Lookman switch has not been completed. I just spoke with Ademola now.
"Ademola loves to play for Nigeria but his switch is taking time".
The NFF said Lookman was named on the provisional squad with the hope his change of international allegiance will be completed before the AFCON.
A media report had suggested caretaker coach Austin Eguavoen dropped the player from the AFCON.
However, Super Eagles begin their AFCON campaign with a clash against seven-time champions Egypt before completing their group stage campaign with games against Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria are three-time champions and will be seeking a fourth continental title in Cameroon.
