AFCON 2021 To Go Ahead As Scheduled Sampson Adedeji After much celebrations and discussions, the scheduled 2021 African Cup of Nations will go on as planned, BSNsports.com.ng can report. The biennial tournament has faced so much criticism in the past due to the non-readiness of host Cameroon and other circumstances. Following the outbreak of new coronavirus variant Omicron, the European Football Association (ECA) threatened to clubs from releasing players for the tournament. A high delegation meeting was held in Qatar on Sunday between the CAF executive committee and FIFA President to decide the fate of the competition. The Exco of African soccer governing body voted to have the tournament go ahead while World soccer governing wanted it shifted to 2023. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that the competition should go on and start on the 9th of January as planned.
