Barely two months before the preliminary round of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Eritrea has decided to withdraw from the qualifier, BSNsports.com.ng can report.

The draw which was conducted late in January 2022 during the 2021 edition of AFCON pitched Eritrea against Botswana in the preliminary round.

As at the time of filing this report, the reason they dropped out from the qualifier remained unknown but it has been confirmed that they will not be participating in the qualifier.

The preliminary round of AFCON is meant for the lower-ranked teams in the continent.

Their withdrawal means that Botswana will go straight into the group stage of the qualifier which is slated to start in June 2022.
