The New Year has started on a blistering note for Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa as his club Al Nassr beat Al-Taawoun 5-4 on penalties to emerge winners of the 2019 Saudi Super Cup on Saturday.
The Saudi Super Cup which is in its 6th edition is an annual football match played between the winners of the previous season's Saudi Pro League and King's Cup.
Musa’s Al-Nassr were the winners of the 2018–19 Saudi Pro League while Al-Taawoun are the winners of the 2019 King Cup.
Saturday’s match in which the fleet-footed Musa was in action for 70 minutes was held at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the first time.
For Musa and his teammates, they would be more than delighted breaking the jinx as this was Al-Nassr's third appearance in the competition and their first in 4 years with no previous win.
Al-Nassr finished as runners-up in both the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Super Cup but for this year they claimed the ultimate prize.
On the other hand, this was Al-Taawoun's first appearance in the Super Cup and will hope for better fortunes next time.
Saturday’s match was originally set to take place in Abu Dhabi on 24 January 2020.
However, on 11 November 2019, the Saudi Fotball Federation announced that match would take place on 4 January 2020 in Jeddah to accommodate the Spanish Super Cup taking place in the same week and same venue.
Musa has enjoyed a trophy-laden career right from the home front with Kano Pillars then abroad.
The dashing winger won three league titles while playing for Russian giants CSKA Moscow and two Super Cup with the same team.
With the national team where he is now the skipper, Musa’s contributions have been phenomenal especially at the Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018 World Cups.
