Akpeyi: Kaizer Chiefs to hand Nigeria keeper new two-year deal

KAIZER Chiefs have made a decision on the future of first-team goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi with the Nigerian’s contract with the club to end at the end of the current season, BSNSports.com.ng reports. The Nigerian international is expected to be handed an added two-year deal by the Phefeni Glamour Boys, according to a source close to the club. “Daniel Akpeyi’s contract with Kaizer Chiefs is set to expire in June,” the source reveals. “The club is keen to hold onto him with a further two-year deal. “Chiefs have huge faith in Akpeyi. Both parties are on the same page in terms of their commitment to extend the player’s stay at the club. “Also looking at Akpeyi’s age, he might as well retire at Chiefs.” Kaizer Chiefs currently possess four first-team goalkeepers battling it out for a starting berth which iincludes Itumeleng Khune, Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen alongside Akpeyi. However, the 33-year-old shot-stopper was brought in by Ernst Middendorp in January 2019 as Chiefs were struggling in the goalkeeping department without Khune. Akpeyi had a shaky start to his career at Naturena, and his first six months at the club were met with huge criticism as some fans wanted the club to release him. However, he proved his doubters wrong this term and helped Chiefs top the standings with his fantastic displays in between the sticks.
