The pair of Cecilia Akpan-Otu of Cross River and Fatima Kazeem of Oyo State on Tuesday emerged winners of the women’s doubles event at the Aso Table Tennis Championship in Abuja.
Akpan-Otu and Kazeem defeated the pair of Bose Odusanya of Lagos State and Fatima Bello of Rivers 11-7 11-10 10-12 and 11-4 to win 3-1.
The pair of Nimota Aregbesola of Lagos State and Alimot Ayinla Rivers came third, while the pair of Ofoime Ebong-Akpan (Cross River) and Tolu Durosinmi (Taraba) finished fourth.
BSN reports that the five-day event had more than 200 table tennis players from 25 states taking part.
In the men’s doubles category, the Ondo State pair of Onaolapo Ojo and Akinwale Fagbamila won 3-1 after defeating Seun Ajetunmobi (Taraba) and Nurudeen Hassan (Rivers) 11-6 11-9 8-11 11-6.
Jamu Azeez (Lagos State) and Rilwan Akanbi (Bayelsa) came third, while David Fayele (Lagos State) and Hammed Bello (Rivers) finished fourth.
BSN Sports reports that a cash prize of N50,000 went to the first-place winners, while N30,000, N25,000 and N10,000 went to the first runners-up, second runners-up and fourth-place winners.
The competition has a total prize money of N1.5 million, with the winners in the male and female singles categories going home with N200,000 each.
