Basketball: Al Ahly, Sporting lose FIBA Africa Championship semi-finals

Egyptian sides Al Ahly and Sporting have lost against Interclube and Ferroviario De Maputo respectively to end the journey in the FIBA Women’s Africa Championship.
Al Ahly finished second in their group and reached the semis after defeating Nigeria’s MFM Queens 62-78 in the previous round. Meanwhile, Alexandria’s Sporting Club defeated DR Congo side CNS in the quarter-finals with a 42-86 score after also finishing second in their group.
The Reds were then drawn against Angolan giants Interclube, after the latter beat Cameroon’s Forces Armées et Police (FAP) in the quarters. The hosts went off to a slow start as they trailed 27-23 and 24-10 in the first two quarters. Despite having reduced the deficit later on into the game, Al Ahly suffered a narrow 86-85 defeat.
On the other hand, Sporting suffered a heavier defeat with a 86-70 scoreline. The Alexandria based side were behind throughout the first three quarters and jumped back in the fourth quarter to win it 23-13. However it wasn’t enough for them to return into the game.
Ferroviario de Maputo will battle InterClube for the title on Saturday at the Cairo Indoor Stadium. While Al Ahly and Sporting will face each other in the third place decider on Saturday at 16:00 local time in Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall 3.
