Former champions Dolphins on Sunday defeated Kaduna Angels 78-73 in an explosive encounter inside the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium, Lagos to begin the Final Six of the Zenith Bank Women’s Basletball League on a bright note.
Dolphins lost just one game to champions First Bank during the Atlantic Conference in Enugu and they carried their impressive form to the final phase of the league in Lagos.
Head coach of Dolphins Ochuko Okworogun said the presence of the family of Wale Aboderin, late proprietor of the club, was a big boost for the players.
“The girls were determined to play and they gave their all to win this game. The presence of the members of our late chairman’s family was a big boost for us, the girls played for them. We are one family and this is very important,” Okworogun said.
Earlier, new entrants Mountain of Fire defeated Nigeria Customs 58-57 in the opening match of the Final Six.
Favourites Customs led for the better part of the game but the MFM ladies left it late to snatch the one-point win. The victory was the third recorded by the team with a single point margin.
MFM defeated First Deepwater in the crucial final match in Enugu to qualify for the final phase of the competition in Lagos.
“No one gave us a chance from Enugu where we emerged for the Final Six. But I’m proud of these girls because within a short time they have been able to prove that with hard work, many things can be achieved in sports,” MFM coach Aderemi Adewunmi said.
