Nigeria National League side, Bayelsa United have confirmed the sacking of some of their registered players for the 2019/20 season, BSNSports.com.ng can report.

The sacking which according to the management is to enable the club plan and prepare for the new season after the Nigerian National League (NNL) was cancelled few weeks ago due to the corona virus which halted all sporting activities globally.

The club top official who spoke with BSN Sports on condition of anonymity said, "The cancellation of the season led to the release of the players because their contract ended in June and there is no need keeping them."

"The decision of the management is in line with the code of the club and players agreement. There is a report of the new season starting in September and the club need to prepare ahead of the new season".

The sacked players who expressed disappointment over the disengagement in a Sports WhatsApp group said it will be difficult to get a new club at the time of the termination of their contracts.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers, has warned clubs through its general secretary, Austin Popo, over indiscriminate sacking of players without following due process, describing the action as unprofessional.

“It is important we recognise the fact that the player is not just a sportsman, but also a workman with rights and as such must be treated as one.”

“The Union therefore wants the NFF and the leagues to take up their responsibilities and halt this ugly trend from the clubs before it gains popularity.”
