CAF CC: Olisema's Late Strike Powers Enyimba To The Quarter-Finals
By Omolagba Oluwayemi
Enyimba FC of Nigeria made it to the CAF Confederations Cup quarter-finals after despatching South Africa's Orlando Pirates 1-0 at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Going into the last game today, the People's Elephants needed an outright win to progress to the knockout stages having lost 3 out of the previous five games, winning only two but a lot of misplaced passes in the first-half makes it look like they might make and even with an improved second-half, it looks like the two time African Champions were about to bow out after the scores remained 0-0 at the 90th minute but a brilliant goal by Olisema in the 5th minute of additional time sends the team to the quarter-finals.
Although equal on points with their opponent, Enyimba finished as group leaders with a better head-to-head record against Pirates who finished 2nd despite the loss.
In the other group game played simultaneously in Algeria between ES Setif and Al Ahli Benghazi, Setif lone goal win could only earn them a third place finish. The Algerian who scored as early as the 2nd minute finished their game minutes earlier than the one in Aba and at a point when they were waiting for the final whistle in Nigeria with the scores still goalless, they had their heart broken hearing that Enyimba won very deep into additional minute.
Enyimba, Orlando Pirates, JS Kabaylie, Coton Sport, Diaraf, CS Sfaxien, Raja Casablanca and Pyramids all qualified for the quarter-finals which draw is expected to take place on Friday.
