Before 1985 across the globe very few countries had a national women's football team. In Africa, this was true with for many countries including Burundi and Madagascar with their senior national sides having yet to play a FIFA sanctioned match.

The Nigeria women's national teams are the most decorated women national team in Africa. The Super Falcons of Nigeria have won 9 African Women Nations Cup titles while the age grade teams have qualified for the previous world cup finals more than any other African countries .
