CAFCL: CR Belouizdad Knocks Akwa United Out Of The Continent
By Omolagba Oluwayemi
Not a good one for Nigeria League champions, Akwa United as they were knocked out of the continent on Sunday night, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions CR Belouizdad on Sunday night defeated Nigerian League champions Akwa United 2-0 to progress on a 2-1 aggregate to the next round of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League season.
In the battle of the champions in the preliminary round, the Nigeria champion held a slim 1-0 advantage going into the second leg but the team failed to do enough to protect their lead in Algiers.
Although they were able to hold their own in the first half playing a goalless draw, the Promise Keepers crumbled in the second half to the consistent pressure of Belouizdad, shipping in two goals which sent them out of the continent.
Having won the Nigeria Professional Football League last season, Akwa United lost most of its stars. Although they did recruit massively, the chemistry lack of chemistry among the players had its effect on the Nigeria side as they were no match for their Algerians counterpart in the second leg.
