Yea i lived in a rented apartment in Abuja for five years and i can remember vividly that the caretaker, Mr Gbenga lived downstairs with his family, doesn't pay rent, barks on the tenants daily and passes out instructions at will. We all call him landlord. Who is a caretaker? He is that man or agency saddled with the responsiblility of taking care of the apartment in the absense of the landlord. Most landlords give absolute powers and control to the caretakers and make the tenants see them as landlords. They give stern instructions to the tenants, that whatever the caretaker says is final. In most cases, the appointment of caretakers is influenced by frienship, previous ties or blood relationship. What this means therefore is that most of these appointments have political undertones and are influenced by factors beyond our control. It also means that, like caretakers, the club owners enjoy equal privileges. They have the blessing of the original owner to wear that tag of club owner while it lasts, and as we all can see, most of the club owners in the NPFL have become so powerful than even the commissioners of sports in their states. Chief Emeka Inyama of Abia Warriors, Paul Bassey of Akwa united, Anyansi Agwu of Enyimba and Isaac Danladi of Nasarawa united, are four club owners with very rich reputation even before mounting the saddle as club owners. These men, have used their individual connections and profiles to further project their clubs in goodlight. The state governors also leverage on their popularity during campaigns and as you may know, Inyama is primed for the National assembly under the umbrella of the PDP while Isaac Danladi will be the next commissioner of sports in Nasarawa state ( God willing) This tells you that, a club owner is not just one muppet picked from the streets and decorated with a tag. They are tested and trusted individuals considered capable by those who appointed them. I would have suggested they be called club coordinators or club directors, but the role of a club owner, is more than just supervising affairs at the club, he is also the mouth piece of the governor to the youths of the state. Chief Emeka Inyama has little problems meeting with the Abia state governor, same thing as Paul Bassey and Isaac Danladi who is a very close confidant to the deputy governor of Nasarawa state, Silas Agara. The budget of a club owner is most times more than that of the commissioners of sports in the states and they enjoy some privileges that few civil servants enjoy in the state. They buy and sell players, they supervise special projects and some of them help their governors take care of dirty jobs. The Sports minister in Nigeria today, operates on a budget, he is Buhari's mouthpiece and eyes on sports. When he speaks, it is assumed that he has spoken the mind of Mr president. Same attributes applies to club owners. Anyansi Agwu is a respected stakeholder today in Abia state. He has been the chairman of Enyimba for over two decades, he has seen the back of more than four state governors and can conveniently write the story of Enyimba football club. Is it not right therefore, to address him as a club owner? As much as i buy the argument that the name CLUB OWNER is rather too ambiguous, i insist that it is not out of place and can be condoned because of the the powers and authority given to these men by their supposed masters.
