However, while the media is replete with reports that CSKA and Spartak are leading the race for Idowu, the defender’s agent, William Davila insists both are not in the picture, but is keeping mute on the possibility of either Lokomotiv and Dinamo making the scoop.
Though Idowu’s agent admitted that a club in Moscow could be the player’s next port of call in Russia, he debunked reports linking the player with city rivals, CSKA and Spartak.
Idowu was born and raised in St. Petersburg but spent a few years between the ages of three and six in Owerri, Nigeria. His father is Nigerian while his mother is half Russian, half-Nigerian.
Idowu started his football career at FC Smena St. Petersburg in Petersburg but left when the club dissolved for Zenith St Petersburg. He left Zenith St Petersburg when he was 18 and joined FC Amker Perm.
It was with FC Amker Perm that he made his Russian Premier League debut in May 2012, but spent the 2013-2014 season on-loan at Dynamo St. Petersburg.
He returned in 2017 to seal a regular place at Amker Perm and his season has played 14 out 16 league games for the club, who are currently 12th on the Russian league table.
Idowu is a versatile defender, who can play in several positions and, though a right-footed defender, he has found a place in right-back at Amker.
Aided by a decent left-foot, the 25-year-old started as a right-back but was soon shifted to left-back, where he has been good and made his mark in Nigeria’s colours at Russia 2018.
He has also excelled as a wing-back in a three-man defence formation and in midfield, all of which saw him also excel for the Super Eagles in a 3-5-2 formation at the Mundial.
Last season, Idowu played in central defence and also in wing-back positions, but has been linked with a move following his performances for the Eagles at the World Cup in his country of birth, where he played in all three games for Nigeria.
Idowu’s agent admitted that he has been in contact with a Moscow-based team, not CSKA or Spartak, as he says the star would be willing to stay in Russia under favourable terms.
Davila said: “I do not know anything about CSKA’s interest in Idowu. I had contact with another Moscow club, but it’s not CSKA and not Spartak. I can say nothing more. Does Brian want to play in Russia? Why not? But it all depends on the conditions.”
