Crisis Heralds Para-Powerlifing World Cup

The Para-Powerlifting World Cup taking place in Abuja has been a subject of controversy again after the President of the Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation President Mrs. Queen Oboh allegedly clashed with officials of the ministry of sports over roles in the organization of the championships.

The build-up to the tournament was blighted by athletes’ unrest before frayed nerves were calmed but our correspondent learnt that relationship between the NPPF and its supervisory body has now become frosty as the competition enters crucial stage.

According to New Telegraph the ongoing squabbles at the championship was as result of the high-handedness of the NPPF boss who had allegedly usurped the functions of the Ministry of Sports as key part of the organization of the tournament.

Sources said that Oboh got the hosting rights for the tournament without thoroughly carrying the ministry along and had been running the show without recourse to the parent body.

“The NPPF boss even leveraged on the name of the First Lady Aishat Buhari to attract sponsors during the fund raising ceremony for the tournament and has not been using the federation’s account to receive donations,” a source told our correspondent.

“Most members of the NPPF board are not happy with her; they are worried that the woman still used her personal E-mail for correspondence in a bid to shield activities around the hosting of the tournament from them and the ministry

“So nobody knows what amount she raised for the event as she as kept it under wraps even without the knowledge of the board members of the federation talkless of the Sports Ministry.”.

The Ministry officials also frowned at the NPPL President for taking the championship to the International Conference Centre instead of hosting at the MKO National Stadium Abuja.

It took the intervention of the President of Nigeria Olympic Committee and an International Olympic Committee member, Habu Gumel , for peace to reign at the venue yesterday.

Gumel had to hold separate talks with the NPPF President and the Permanent Secretary of the Sports Ministry, Gabriel Aduda, who was seen boiling before peace was restored.

The World Cup will serve as part of qualifiers for the next Paralympic Games in Japan next September.
