Delta tops table at just concluded Korean Ambassador’s Cup

The 10th edition of the Korean Ambassadors Cup came to a successful close at the Teslim Balogun stadium with the participation of 172 athletes from 28 teams who competed in a total of 21 events over the two days.

The nationally ranked event, which was streamed live on various online platforms deployed modern taekwondo technology including the Instant Video Replay system, Daedo Gen 2 scoring system and Taekoplan Overall Venue Management system. The event was organized by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation and supported by the Embassy of Korea in Nigeria.

On the overall medal table, Delta led with five Gold, two Silver and two Bronze medals. Kebbi came in second position with three gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Kano came in third position with three gold and one bronze medals.

Lagos, who won the largest number of medals at the tournament, came in fourth place with two gold, five silver and six bronze medals. Nigeria Army came in joint fifth position alongside the Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation [CCSF] Taekwondo team with two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Q-Madi TKD Club, Oyo, Akwa Ibom and Edo clinched also clinched gold medals while other teams that got on the medal table include Anambra, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and the Nigeria Police.

With 21 of the 28 teams got on the medal table to share the spoils of the 21 gold, 21 silver and 32 bronze medals that were available to be won.

In the male -58kg fin weight category, Kano’s Buhari Shehu emerged the gold medalist after defeating Olasunkanmi Sulaiman representing an unaffiliated club. Kingsley Osigwe of Lagos and Adewale Mosobalaje of Oyo came away with the bronze medals.

In the male -58kg fly weight category, national player Abdulfathi Sanusi representing Q-Madi won the gold medal after eliminating fellow national player, Arinola Abdullateef, who was representing Lagos state. Kano’s Lawan Muhammad and CCSF’s Daniel Inaju won the bronze medals.

In the male -68kg feather weight category, Kano’s Baffa Muhammad clinched the gold medal after defeating Kebbi’s Jamilu Danbaba in the finals. CCSF’s Precious Benson and Ondo’s Aramide Eniola came away with the bronze medals.

In the male -74kg lightweight category, Kano’s Umar Muhammad defeated Abiodun Olaniyan of an unaffiliated club in the finals after the duo had relegated Idrees Ibrahim of Lagos state and Q-Madi’s Dabi Isaac to the bronze medals.

In the male -80kg welter weight category, national team player Peter Itiku defeated Anambra’s Dandy Ogbonna in the finals while the bronze medals went to Oyo’s Abdulrahmon Fehintola and Richard Onyeanusi of an unaffiliated club.

In the male -87kg middle weight category, Oyo’s Henry Nzelu defeated Richard Nwachi of Nigeria Army to clinch the gold medal, while the bronze medals went to Ondo’s Bunmi Olaniyan and Uyioghosa Uzebu of Nigeria Army.

In the male +87kg heavy weight category, African bronze medalist and number one seed Benjamin Okuomose of Nigeria Army defeated Kenneth Ogbu of CCSF to win the gold medal, while the bronze medals went to Atargha Ogbe of Lagos and Nwokolo Uchechukwu of an unaffiliated club.

In the female -46kg fin weight category, Delta’s Sekinat Adebayo won the gold while Kebbi’s duo of Modinat Abogun and Humble Orji won the silver and bronze medal respectively.

In the female -49kg fly weight category, Delta’s Sekinat Adebayo defeated Nasarawa’s Laady Iho in the finals to emerge champion, while the bronze medals went to Ogun’s Zainab Oyelami and Shukurat Abdulsalam of Lagos.

In the female -53kg bantam weight category, Edo’s Abani Blessing defeated Mary Abah of Nigeria Police to champion while Mariam Adegoke of Lagos came away with the bronze medal.

In the female -57kg feather weight category, Kebbi’s Fatimah Abdullahi defeated Delta’s Adaeze Asigbe to win the gold medal while the bronze medals went to Grace Aja of an unaffiliated club and Ogun’s Saidat Hassan.

In the female -62kg lightweight category, Alice Ikor of the Nigeria Army defeated CCSF’s Favour Sunday in the finals, while Delta’s Akuma Okolie settled for the bronze medal.

In the female -73kg, former African champion and number one seed, Uzoamaka Otuadinma clinched the gold medal after defeated Adaobi Efobi of an unaffiliated club, while the bronze medals went to Kebbi’s Wisdom Winnie and Zainab Ayoola of Lagos State.

In the poomsae individual male event, Kebbi’s duo of Oluwasesan Abodunrin and Haruna Usman won the gold and silver medal respectively, while the bronze went to Tosin Amosli of an unaffiliated club. In the pooomae individual female event, delta had a clean sweep of all three medals with Adaeze Asigbe, Sekinat Adebayo and Rukayat Jimoh winning the gold, silver and bronze respectively.

In the poomsae team male event, Kebbi clinched the gold while the silver medal went to Lagos state and Nigeria Army settled for the bronze medal. In the poomsae team female event, the gold went to Delta while the silver went to Lagos State. In the poomsae pair event, Team Lagos clinch the gold and silver medals while the bronze medal went to Kebbi state.

All medalists were presented with brand new Taekwondo uniforms, sports bags and training equipment in addition to the national ranking points awarded by the federation.

MVP male and female awards went to Peter Itiku of CCSF and Uzoamaka Otuadinma of Delta who walked away with the brand new 49 inches TV screens that came with the awards, which were presented by the South Korean Ambassador, Mr Lee In-Tae.

Best coach award went to Adakola Akpah of the Nigeria Army while the best team award went to Lagos who won the most amount of medals with a 100% indigenous and home-trained team.

The Korea Ambassador Cup is an annual taekwondo competition supported by the Embassy of Korea in Nigeria and organized by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation in conjunction with a host state.
