Enugu State tops medals table as National Grassroots Sports entre day 3   By Amaechi Agbo Enugu state contingents currently top the medals table in the ongoing 1st edition of National Grassroots Sports Festival at the National Stadium, Abuja.  The Coal City young team has so far won a total of 11 medals in the competition. According to the media officer of the state’s contingent, Daniel Onwuegbuna, the Coal City contingents emerged champions in some of the sports events that have been concluded such as 100m, 400m, and 800m. Explaining how his athletes won the medals, Onwuegbuna said “Chibuike Ezenwudo won gold in 800 meters boys; Onyinyechi Ilo won gold in 800 meters girls as well as 400 meters. Agu Blessing won gold in 100 meters girls while Johnson Nnamani won another gold in 400 metres boys. We also have a silver and 5 bronze medals bringing our total medal haul to 11,” he said   Enugu state is participating in the tournament with a total of 48 contingents with three sports - athletics, football and boxing - as their area of focus. The state’s football team will play Delta State in the final of the football event on Saturday.  In another sporting event, Skating, Samuel Franklin from Lagos won gold in the 10 Laps race while Usama Lawal from Nasarawa state won silver with Sadiq Khalid settling for bronze. Speaking to the table tennis players ahead of their finals today, the Chairman and Chief Coordinator of the National Grassroots Sports Festival, Angelo Peter advised the youths to take the sports serious as the purpose of the festival was to discover them and nurture them for future sporting glory.  “You are not just participating for fun; you are participating to be discovered. Therefore, try to train hard and bring laurels so that with time we can give you international exposure and training. Do your best and see how you can improve as a tennis player. We are providing you with the right platform through this competition,” he said.    The 1st edition of National Grassroots Sports Festival tagged “Sports for All” started on Tuesday and will end on Saturday, April 29.
