Ethiopia Letesenbet Gidey Breaks Sifan Hassan's Two-Day-Old 10,000m World Record By Uche Dozie Twenty-three-year old Ethiopian athlete Letesenbet Gidey has broken the women’s 10,000m track record at the Ethiopian trials; a world record that was achieved just a few days ago, BSNSport.com.ng report. Just two days after the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan ran a 10,000-meter world record of 29:06.82 in Hengelo, Gidey lowers it once more on the same track. The world silver medallist, who last year set a world 5000m record of 14:06.62, was a runaway winner, finishing more than a minute ahead of Tsigie Gebreselama (30:06.01). In the race, Ababel Yeshaneh was on Gidey's chase for most part, but dropped towards the end. The Ethiopian nevertheless remained strong with her leading pace and produced a 72-seconds laps before crossing the finish line. After the world silver medalist said (She) “I expected to run a world record and (She) “I’d like to try to break the world record again and break 29 minutes.” She becomes the first woman to hold the 5,000 and 10,000m world records simultaneously since Norway's Ingrid Kristiansen, who held both from 1986-1993.
