Everyday, New Drama: The Unending Shameful Stories That Surround Nigeria Sports By Omolagba Oluwayemi Nigeria, once the giant of Africa, the pride of black nations and the envy of many has suddenly become a place of ridicule in the face of the whole World. How has thou lost thy glory, how has thou suddenly become a mess among thy colleagues and how has thou become a subject of ridicule in the face of the World? When it comes to talent, I don't think there is any Black Nation in the World as talented as Nigeria, when it comes to passion, determination and the CAN DO SPIRIT Nigerians are number one, ofcourse we've witnessed that over the years. Sometimes ago, when you hear the name of a Black Man doing so well in the World of Sports, the first country that comes to mind is Nigeria, one will almost think every Blackman in the World is a Nigerian and that earned us respect among every other Black Nation. We have abundant talents in almost all facets of life who could dominate not just the black nations but also the World and yet we keep lagging behind and even in places we used to dominate before, we've been caught up. When you check the pages of the dailies, when you surf the web, on social medias, you see stories that breaks the heart on a daily basis and you begin to wonder what really the problem is. A country with lesser population than Lagos State runs a football league with sponsors and players well paid, everything properly done but in our case, you hear disheartening stories everytime and when you think the problem is probably because of our large population you look above and you see countries with larger populations equally doing well. One can count the number of Sport federation that are doing well at the moment with his fingers. There is virtually a Sport federation not rocked with corruption crisis but still our athletes gives their all to be the best. The D'Tigress ongoing alleged corruption issues, the doping scandal of the leading female athlete in the country, the tussle for leadership power among the federations are just few among the crisis degrading our Sports and this can further damage the country's image as far as Sports is concerned. The lackadaisical attitude of those managing the Sporting affairs of the nation has led many of her athletes to pledging allegiance to another country yet no one is seeing the looming danger. A time will come when no one will want to represent the country anymore if things do not change. A time will come when the best will prefer to wear another national colour instead of that of the nation. The book of daily lamentations raised by the Sportsmen has not at any point moved those who should do things right because they have their gains from the pains of the masses and in country where Sport is seen as a political tool, you expect things like this to happen. Until things are done the right way, until heads begin to roll on the floor for not doing things the way it should be, until the incapacitated are flushed out of the positions that matters, until we begin to put a square peg in a square hole and vice versa, things we get worse. Until there is this understanding that Sports is not, should not and never be a political tool, the country will continue to lose its relevance as far as Sports is concerned. Until the right changes are made, the book of lamentations will never ceased to exist.
