Ex-Players, Nigerians React To The Proposed Aigbogun Eaglets Coach Assignment

By Niyi Busari

As Nigerians are waiting for the announcement of the various national team head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) who promised to name the coaches last week due closeness of many international age grade matches.

Reactions have trailed the reported proposed chosen of former Flying Eagles coach, Paul Aigbogun as the Golden Eaglets coach.

Following report by BSN Sports that the NFF might name Aigbogun as the next Golden Eaglets head coach, many Nigerians seem to have lost confidence in the coach because they believed he does have experience to select the right Nigeria grassroots players who can win the world cup.

The Golden Eaglets is a developmental competition and as such Nigeria will need someone who knows much about discovering the right players to represent the country as failure to get that right may lead to disaster.

Reacting to the proposed assignment, Kennedy Onwunali, former ACB Feeders, Framas FC and Concord FC full back said:
"If we are serious about developing our football Nff should pick the coaches on merit, Paul have nothing to prove to us again, Coaches like Calab Esu, Malkaba, Usman Abdallah, Ogunbote, Ilechukwu should be made to come to the national team and prove a point."

Abuja based football fan, Mr Joseph Ujokwu reacted: "To come and slaughter the youth, God will help us."

A seasoned radio sports presenter, Udeme George referred to Aigbogun as a failed coach.
"The failed one."

Facebook user, Aondoaka Usah Solomon, reacting to the post on BSN Sports Facebook page commented

"Coach Paul Aigbogun is a total failure NFF should try other capable hands like Finidi George.

Another facebook user, HM Wada commented.
"This NFF is a joke.."

Aigbogun, former Enyimba International coach struggled at the African U20 Nations Cup to pick the world cup ticket. In Poland, the Flying Eagles were bundled out in the second round of the tournament.

It was reported that he was chosen by NFF chieftain to retain the Flying Eagles job but a more powerful interest from the South West wanted the slot given to ex-international and coach of Crown Ogbomosho, Oladunni Oyekale.

Based on this, according to source, all things being equal, Paul Aigbogun will be announced as Golden Eaglets coach. Despite all these interest and handpicking of national team coaches, the NFF paid consultant fees to PriceWater Ltd. to handle the screening process of the over 150 coaches who indicated interest in handling Nigeria national teams.
