Former Super captain and coach, Austin Eguavoen has been appointed as the Technical Director and Head coach of Greek Division 3 side A.P.S Zakynthos, BSNSports reports.
The former Sunshine stars coach returned to management more than a year after quitting the NPFL side (Sunshine stars) in April 2017 for a more lucrative position in Greece.
‘I was first contacted last season by a friend, he told me at the time that the club needed an experienced hand because of their financial problems, Eguavoen told reporters.
‘But I held back until later this year, they were relegated to the fourth division and managed to come back a year later, but I was particularly sold on the Club’s vision after I spoke with the President.
‘I wanted flexibility and so I asked for the Technical Director role, which also allows me time for developmental work. ‘
Eguavoen, who also served as Head Coach of the Super Eagles, told journalists that the Nigerian league had “not been fair to me”.
‘I can tell you that Nigerian Coaches are highly rated, but in the league with all my experience, I can tell you the League back home has not been favorable to me. But then again, Dikko [Shehu] is doing well with the job; of course Irabor [Nduka] laid the foundation.
The 53-year-old, former defender, signed a one-season contract that will run until April 2019, and he’s expected to resume with the Greek Third division side next week.
Zakynthos is based on the Greek Island of Zakynthos and was founded in 1969.
They also have another Nigerian , Besto Azu on their books; the center-forward who also plays as a winger joined the club in September 2018.
He is of dual nationality, as he is also registered as Swedish national.
