FCT Emerge Best Overall Table Tennis Team In 2018 NSF By Niyi Busari The host city of the 19th national sports festival, FCT has emerged overall best team in the ongoing 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja, bsnsports.com.ng reports. FCT won three gold medals in table tennis to claim the first position in a star-studded competition. FCT bagged gold in women singles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles. Ajoke Ojomu became the best women table tennis player in Nigeria at the competition when she defeated Akpan Cecilia representing Cross River 4-3 in the final of a well contested game. Ajoke started the final game on a losing note as Akpan claimed the first two rounds 11-8 and 11-4. She however, came back stronger and turned the table against her opponent to win the next three rounds 11-7, 11-2, 11-9. Cecelia though, won one more set as Ajoke also claimed the last set to end the final result 4-3. On her road to final, Ajoke Ojomu humiliated Amusa Alaba of Ogun state 4-0, in the first game of the tournament, whitewashed Akpan Janet from Cross River 4-0 to progress to the semi final. Her semi final opponent, Nimota Aregbesola had made the headline having defeated Nigerian table tennis legend, Funke Oshonaike 4-3 in the quarter final. A determined and focused Ojomu without pressure carefully defeated Nimota Aregbesola 4-3 in a tension soaked semi final encounter . In the mixed doubles, the perfect and excellent combination of Abdulrahaman Abdullahi and Azeez Solanke for the nation's capital was too much for other opponents to handle as they defeated Osun, Cross River in the quarter and semi final of the tournament. The final game against Team Ondo was a tough one as the duo of Solanke and Abdulrahman have to sweat it out before edging out Team Ondo table tennis players 4-3 in the final. The mixed doubles ended in a dramatic final as the duo of Ajoke Ojomu and Azeez Solanke defeated Ogunsanya Bose and Taye representing Lagos state 3-1 after losing the first set to the Lagosians. Ajoke and Azeez had won Janet Effiong and Solomon of Cross River 3-1 in the quarter final, defeated Funmi Ajala and Taofik Maoya representing Oyo state 3-1 in the semi final.
